Once upon a time in Basel

"Once upon a time... That's how fairy tales begin, and if I were to write down the story of my last years, travel back in time, and give it to my younger self to read, she would undoubtedly consider it a fairy tale.

Why am I writing this this time? I was in Basel with Claudia last weekend. In the place where my journey began, so to speak. Or at least the part that deserves the word journey. Before that, it was more of a standstill with short day trips. Although, it was precisely with such a day trip that something began whose development I couldn't have foreseen at the time. It was my first appearance as Nicole in daylight and in the midst of an incredible number of people (Basel - The big Event).

Back then, I mostly looked down, avoiding eye contact, let alone interaction. It wasn't just the temperature that made beads of sweat appear on my forehead during this visit. Relaxation is definitely something else. Nevertheless, I'm still incredibly happy that Claudia made this day possible for me. Everything that has happened in the last few years, and especially months, is based on this very day.

The year is 2025. (Actually, when I was younger, you'd still hear the words "Space - the infinite expanse." before that.) Basel 2025 was completely different from 2017 and 2019. Of course, it wasn't Basel, and it wasn't the people around me either; I was different. I was relaxed. I was confident. I felt comfortable with myself. I especially enjoyed being able to truly enjoy my time with Claudia and her family this time. No stress to distract me, no things I didn't want to do because I didn't dare or felt uncomfortable. Just spending quality time and enjoying it.

We had a wonderful time in places where I was so incredibly nervous. Riding the tram, going to restaurants, shopping through the city center, and riding the tram again. Interacting with people suddenly works too. Ordering, discussions, and even withstanding or responding to the stupid looks from one or the other – I can do it now.

To round things off, Claudia and Marc prepared a wonderful surprise for me. A water taxi tour across the Rhine, including a lock and an incredible amount of new information and experiences. But it was good that we did it this year and not on our previous visits, because this time I was able to enjoy it without any restrictions. Thank you both for this experience.

That's it for today and see you next time.

Sincerely, Nicole
